PLEASE NOTE: Due to the overwhelming extent of this problem and the unbelievable volume of email we have received, we regret that we cannot respond to questions about browser parasites at this time. If you have attempted to contact us about this parasite please accept our apology for not responding. "Thank you's" are always appreciated ;-)

Description

GAMsys is a Browser Helper Object that opens pop-up adverts.

Distribution

Installed by games downloaded from free-windows-games.com.

What it does

Advertising

Yes. Occasionally opens untargeted pop-ups from its controlling server ads.free-windows-games.com.

Privacy violation

Currently no. The URL of the page that was loaded at the point the pop-up was opened is passed to the ad server, but at the moment no cookie or unique ID is passed so web usage is not being tracked.

Security issues

None known.

Stability problems

Yes. Causes IE to crash on start-up in IE6 (at least Service Pack 1 or 2).

Removal

Open a DOS command prompt window (Start->Programs->Accessories) and enter:

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 "..\GAMsys.dll"

Restart the computer, open the Windows folder, and delete the GAMsys.dll file. Also check for FavoriteMan/Int, which tends also to be bundled by free-windows-games.
