Using PuTTY for SSH Telnet

(Last modified Aug 28, 2002 )

PuTTY is a free telnet client for that supports SSH1. It runs on the Windows operating systems (95, 98, 2000).

Finding and Downloading PutTTY

You can find PuTTY by pointing your browser to the PuTTY home page. You can also find this page by searching for the word 'putty' on Google.com. The PuTTY home page is the first entry.

Once at the PuTTY home page, navigate to the download section. Download the latest release version of putty.exe. This is the only file you will need. Once downloaded, PuTTY is ready to run. No installation is necessary.

Using PuTTY

Click on the file putty.exe. This will bring up the configuration window.

In the box called "Host Name" enter either your domain name or enter your IP address.

Select the SSH option. Select Open. This will open a terminal on the server.

The first time you log into you site, a dialog box will pop up that says PuTTY Security Alert. Answer yes to add the RSA key and continue.

In the terminal you will see a login prompt. Enter the user name for your account.

You will then be prompted for the password for the account. Enter the password. This will log you in to the home directory for that user.

For further documentation on PuTTY please see the resources on their home page.
